Turns out that there was another poop culture result pending and today it came back positive for Clostridium butyricum. I am not really sure what that means though. Very little can be found on PubMed. It has been found in NEC patients, but also in healthy neonates. There are many substrains, some better some worse (not sure which one he has, or if we even know). They've decided to continue metronidazole (orally) for another 2-3 days and that should be that. Apparently, this would not delay discharge. Yes, word discharge has been used today! Maybe in a day or two, depending on how he eats.
