Around the world in Cessna 182

November 30, 2003
Macapa, Brazil (SBMQ) to Paramaribo, Suriname (SMZO)

In the effort to make the most of the thanksgiving weekend, I did another leg today and flew from Macapa to Paramaribo, the capital of Suriname. After last few days, I will probably need few days of rest, not to mention all the work I have to catch up on.

This flight took me over the north part of Brazil, across French Guiana (I did not land there) and over Suriname. Direct route from Macapa to Paramaribo was following the heading of 342 and once more I chose 9,500 ft. as my cruise altitude. Sunset caught up with me as I was approaching the border of French Guiana (screen shot included below). The rest of the trip was (obviously) in the complete darkness.

I guess I should really try to fly at least some parts of this long trip in the IFR mode. Maybe next few legs that I have to complete in total darkness would be good time to start practicing IFR. I will think about that.

There are no shots of the approach and landing as the airport personnel never bothered to turn the lights on, so there was nothing to see. How I landed... I was once again flying by the GPS and the altimeter until I got close enough to see the runway in the darkness. This time, 30 seconds was all I had. Not too bad. I will have to re-examine my flight plan though and replace all these tiny airports with the big international ones...
